The One Financial Decision That Will Change Your Marriage Forever

My husband and I had already been together for over five years when he proposed, but we still went into marriage with no real experience of togetherness. We had never lived together and never shared a bank account. We lived together with a combined bank account for the last month leading up to our wedding and it was the most difficult month of our entire relationship. There were no cold feet, no doubts of whether we were making the right decision to get married, but it was TOUGH. Suddenly, we weren’t on the same page about one of the most important topics discussed in marriage: money. We had no money and, more specifically, no budget.

It’s no secret that studies have shown that money fights DO predict divorce rates.

We came home from our beautiful honeymoon (a 5 day cruise to Mexico) to a huge credit to our bank account from all of our extra expenses (beer). Two days later, I hopped over to our local library and picked up Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. I knew of Dave Ramsey but didn’t know the first thing about applying his program to my life (you can read more about the beginning of our journey here). Within a week I had convinced my husband that we needed to follow his steps. What I didn’t realize that the hardest step in the program isn’t really a step at all, it’s creating a budget.

I decided that to try out Dave Ramsey’s company’s budgeting app called EveryDollar. It’s a free budgeting app that allows you to track your monthly income and expenses, as well as keeping track of our progress in Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps. I had previously attempted a paper budget, but it just wasn’t working out for me. EveryDollar gives you the opportunity to track each and every transaction you have through the money. You can sync the app on multiple devices, so both you and your spouse can look at your budget in real time, no matter where you are!

Even though our budget is NEVER perfect and we aren’t always accomplishing our monthly financial goals in the way we’d like, we’ve never been more in sync as a couple than when we have a financial plan for the month. Instead of my husband judging how much I spent at the grocery store or me questioning whether we had the money for him to go out to eat, we can relax knowing it’s been budgeted for. A budget gives you permission to spend and peace of mind with your finances.

Until next time,

Mrs. Hen
